The Austerlitz Village Fire Company as we know it today was organized in 1937. Prior to that date, there were some modest equivalents of a fire company. During the 20’s and 30’s, Henry McCreary garaged a vintage Chevy fire engine in a shed at his gas station near Green River. The Chevy fire engine survived to this day and is in collection somewhere in Massachusetts. The mission of the Austerlitz Volunteer Fire Company is to provide residents and other persons within the district’s coverage area, full Emergency Firematic and limited Emergency Medical Services.

The Spencertown Fire Company was organized in 1917.  The first vehicle was a hand drawn chemical cart, the tools consisted of a chemical tank, an ax, and a few lengths of hose.  Today’s fire company consists of over forty active members and four fire fighting vehicles.  Each member must attend a sixteen week course in the essentials of fire fighting.  Our fire company was one of the first groups in the county to establish a First Responder Squad.
